Can anyone tell me how you become a moderator on the site and what the role entails?

Is it a voluntary role or by invitation only?

Might be able to help but depends entirely on the role expected and the time involved but willing to help out so we can all continue to enjoy what is essentially OUR site

It's voluntary, but I've known mods be parachuted in on odd occasions, such as when there's been attacks on the integrity of the site and extra hands are needed on deck to fight the slime monsters.

The rules say someone has to have been a site member for 6 months, but I have known someone become a moderator after 2 weeks... it all depends.

Much of the job is common sense, eg deleting web-steals, stopping harassment, reporting spammers, etc. And there's also a need to watch out for manipulation of the photo popularity galleries.
